The battles fought by the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. ,the fact is that the position of the Muslims was the defending one.The offenders were always the Non Muslims.
See the History of all the battles by encyclopedia Britannica,the fact is that everywhere the Non Muslims had started the battle,the took lead in marching towards the Muslims.
Hadees about killing an innocent non-Muslim:
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that reads:“ He who kills a mu`ahad (a person who enjoys protection under a peace treaty with the Muslim state) will never smell the fragrance of Paradise. Indeed, its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years walk.” (Reported by Ahmad and Al-Bukhari)
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w can NOT be termed as murderer or assassin by definition.

Read a little bit about his treatment of non-Muslims, war prisoners, slaves, etc. You will find that he was way ahead of his time in treating humans as humans, for which today, we needed some “Conventions”, that had to be signed but are always not followed, almost as a rule, to this date.
Muhammad s.a.w.s. did not need any convention. He had a divine guidance and as such, he could not have been cruel to others, since his Creator wouldn’t allow that
Quran’s killing verses is really talking about self-defense while the Prophet (pbuh) and his followers ran from Mecca city to Medina city to live a better life, all of the battles like Uhud and Badr were in Medina because of the unbelievers came to kill them all. When unbelievers came to fight and kill the Prophet and his followers these verses came down to don't be afraid of anyone except God and kill anyone who's trying to kill you, and fight anyone who's fighting you (Self-Defense).''
